Mar 1, 2025MidAmerica Flyway
Candace McGraw / CVG Airport / February 28, 2025Regional aviation economic development strategy aims to accelerate economic growth in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Dayton, Louisville regions and beyondThe MidAmerica Flyway represents a bold step forward in aviation economic development, bringing together the regions of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Dayton, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky. Envisioned as part of CVG’s [New Heights](https://www.cvgairport.com/business/about/new-heights/) strategic plan, MidAmerica Flyway aligns the strengths of these regions as a single corridor where aviation, innovation, logistics, supply chain, aerospace, and defense companies thrive. In 2024, CVG engaged the global consultancy, Ernst & Young (EY), to analyze data and develop an economic strategy to support the aviation industry in collaboration with regional economic development partners and airport leaders; this effort included representatives from REDI Cincinnati, BE NKY Growth Partnership, Dayton Development Coalition, Dayton International Airport, Greater Louisville Inc., Louisville Economic Development Alliance, and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Now, through the MidAmerica Flyway, these organizations are aligning with the common goal to increase awareness of this region’s global leadership in the aviation/aerospace, supply chain, and logistics sectors.Strength of location and existing industries can propel further economic growthEY’s findings confirm that the region’s thriving aerospace and logistics industry contributes greatly to Kentucky and Ohio’s economy with 8,000 companies employing more than 190,000 workers, meaning the MidAmerica Flyway is one of the top 10 markets for this sector in the United States. As home to global supply chain and logistics leaders, including Amazon Air, DHL Express, UPS, and others, the MidAmerica Flyway is primed for global business attraction. Aerospace companies also have an outsized impact on the regional economy with the likes of GE Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and hundreds of suppliers and service providers having headquarters or major operations in the region. The MidAmerica Flyway boasts strong innovation and research institutions, including the University of Cincinnati UAV Lab, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, University of Dayton Research Institute, GE Aerospace EPISCenter, and more.By fostering a network that recognizes all parts of the aviation ecosystem, from airport operators to aerospace manufacturers, technology companies to educational institutions, the region is a beacon for excellence that can drive future growth, accelerate innovation, and retain and attract more talent. Leveraging the unique strengths of each communityCincinnati/Northern Kentucky: the center for aircraft engine and parts manufacturing, air cargo logistics, and e-commerceCincinnati, Ohio, is home to leading aerospace and aviation manufacturers, with key assets like GE Aerospace’s headquarters, hundreds of Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, and an extensive education system. It’s an ideal location for aircraft engine and parts manufacturing. - Cincinnati is home to the largest inland port in the nation.- Aerospace manufacturing contributes $4 billion to regional GDP.As part of the Cincy region, Northern Kentucky has a dense concentration of aerospace and logistics companies that are anchored by CVG, the 6th largest cargo airport in North America, which generates an annual economic impact of $9.3 billion (2022). - CVG is home to two air cargo hubs: Amazon Air’s primary U.S. hub and DHL’s Global Super Hub for the Americas. - Half of the U.S. population lives within 600 miles of CVG. Dayton, Ohio: the future of advanced air mobility and defenseDayton’s legacy of flight began with the Wright Brothers and continues today with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Springfield’s Air National Guard Base. Add in Joby Aviation’s 2023 decision to establish a manufacturing operation in Dayton, and it’s no wonder the Birthplace of Aviation remains a leader in aerospace, air mobility, and defense research and education. - Dayton’s military and federal installations account for more than $19 billion in economic activity supported by more than 100,000 jobs.- Defense-related activities and investment account for 17% of the regional economy.Louisville, Kentucky: a logistics hub, advancing healthcare innovationsLouisville has long been a logistics and supply chain hub because of its extensive air, road, and rail connectivity. Recent innovations in healthcare logistics are solidifying the Derby City’s reputation as an international leader in logistics and supply chains. - Louisville is home to UPS Worldport, headquarters for UPS Airlines, which processes more than 400,000 packages per hour. - Products moved from Louisville can reach more than 80% of the global population within 24 hours. The MidAmerica Flyway is at the forefront of advanced research across a variety of technological areas and markets in aerospace, supply chain/logistics, and more. Industry-university partnerships are active in advanced air mobility, cyber physical systems, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and many others. The MidAmerica Flyway reflects a strategy that aims to align partners toward a common goal: to build a world-class aerospace ecosystem that attracts talent, drives investment, and enhances the quality of life for residents. Industry engagement is foundational to the success of these efforts.Supported by EY’s assessment, the partners will engage industry across a spectrum of areas:- Continue to work together to build a talent pipeline with educational partners, which will meet the MidAmerica Flyway’s workforce needs for decades to come;- Market the MidAmerica Flyway to global audiences, including target companies, which will benefit by considering locating in the region;- Work collaboratively to prepare sites for new economic development projects, especially on and around the region’s major airports, which can be leveraged to catalyze innovation and global access. The MidAmerica Flyway is preparing for takeoff and gaining momentum to transform this vision into a dynamic reality that will deliver lasting economic success for generations to come.Learn more

One-Stop Hops Across the Pond
The historic Carmo Convent in LisbonWhenever I’m talking with friends about travel or helping plan a trip for a friend, I often end up recommending a European destination.A perfect day at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, DenmarkThere are three good reasons I recommend Europe.1. It’s fast. With just one stop, you can fly to many cities in Europe in less time than it takes to drive to Florida. It’s often quicker to fly to European destinations than to Hawaii.2. There are so many flight options.By using one of CVG’s flights to London on [British Airways](https://www.britishairways.com/travel/home/public/en_us/) or Paris aboard [Delta](https://www.delta.com/), you can open up your trip to dozens of incredible destinations when you connect through Heathrow or Charles de Gaulle airports. There are additional one-stop options on carriers like [American](https://www.aa.com/), [Air Canada](https://www.aircanada.com/home/us/en/aco/flights), and [United](https://www.united.com/en/us/) offering connections at airports in Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Toronto, Chicago, and more.3. It’s affordable.People are often surprised to learn how affordable their dream vacation can be! We’ve flown to Europe many times and generally pay between $450 and $650 for round trip tickets. (Yes, really.)A beautiful day in the El Born neighborhood of BarcelonaAn easy way to find one-stop tripsOne of the most useful tools to locate one-stop trips is [Google Flights](https://www.google.com/travel/flights?gl=US&hl=en-US). Enter CVG as your starting point in the “Where From?” box. Leave the “Where To?”, “Departure”, and “Return” boxes blank. Then press the blue “Explore” button. From there, click the drop-down that says “Stops”, and select the “1 stop or fewer” button. Then slide on over to Europe and check out all of the places you can visit over the next six months with just one stop from CVG. It will also display the best price. If you have specific dates or a specific month you’d like to travel, choose the calendar button and adjust your search accordingly. The Douro Valley is a must-visit location in Portugal. So where should you go? Here are a few of my favorites.Parc Guell provides outstanding views (and occasionally messy hair)!__Barcelona, SpainJust one stop away on British Airways, Delta, American, United, and Air Canada__If you’ve been following the Jet with Jay blog over the years, you might wonder why I mention this city so much. There are so many reasons! It’s easy to get to, and prices are often low because of competition from multiple airlines. During the summer, there are as many as 40 one-stop options every day from CVG to Barcelona. Getting from the airport to the city center is easy via bus or taxi. And once you’ve arrived, there is so much to enjoy: tasty tapas, outstanding musical productions, breathtaking architecture, and wonderful people.Toasting a beautiful day on the canals of Copenhagen__Copenhagen, DenmarkJust one stop away on Delta, Air Canada, and British Airways__If your ideal vacation involves riding a bike, walking through beautiful parks and along scenic waterways, and enjoying a clean and vibrant city loaded with lots of charming shops and restaurants, then you’ll love Copenhagen. There are about a dozen one-stop options to get you there from CVG. We really enjoyed our summertime visit. The weather was perfect, and the days were long. (The sunset on June 21 is nearly 11 p.m.!) A stop at [Tivoli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivoli_Gardens) Gardens theme park is a blast for the entire family. Even overcast days in Amsterdam are magical.__Amsterdam, NetherlandsJust one stop away on Delta, British Airways, Air Canada, United, or American__There are so many one-stop flight options to Amsterdam. If you’re browsing for Christmastime, you’ll find many days with 50+ ways to get to a city filled with gorgeous architecture, loads of historic sites, and world-class museums. On Christmas Eve a few years ago, my wife and I treated each other to an early gift; she bought a [24-hour unlimited museum pass](https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/tickets/i-amsterdam-city-card) and went to as many as possible while I booked a fishing charter in the big canal. Be sure to enjoy a fresh [stroopwafel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroopwafel) too!A relaxing afternoon in Lisbon__Lisbon, PortugalJust one stop away on British Airways, Air Canada, Delta, United, or American__We visited Portugal last year and had a blast. A September trip ended up being a great choice. Flight prices were very low, crowds were smaller than the busy summer season, and the weather was pleasant. Be sure to try the famous pastel de nata, a tart made of sweet egg custard and cinnamon. If you’d like to add another stop to your itinerary, take a high-speed train to [Porto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porto), and spend a few days exploring; then fly home with just one stop! With more than 20 one-stop flight options, you’ll be able to decide if you want to leave around lunchtime or later after work. The history of the Colosseum in Rome is incredible.__Rome, ItalyJust one stop away on British Airways, Delta, American, United, or Air Canada__Combining the hustle and bustle of a major city with 2000-year-old architecture, amazing food, festivals, and more history than you can handle, Rome is a perfect year-round destination. With many famous sites to see, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain, make sure you bring a comfortable pair of shoes. We visited in December, and the holidays were magical. We enjoyed the festive decor and visited Vatican City during the Pope’s Christmas Day message.I’d fly across an ocean for a fresh stroopwafel in Amsterdam.Got your passport?- Make sure you have a valid passport with enough time remaining (many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months after your trip), and have blank pages to be stamped. Don’t forget that children need a passport, too!- Getting or renewing a passport isn’t too hard. Many [US Post Office](https://www.usps.com/) locations are great one-stop shops who have the documents you’ll need, can assist with taking your photo, and ensure you use the correct envelopes and postage. Soon, it’ll be even easier, as the U.S. State Department recently announced that a [Passport Agency Office](https://www.state.gov/expanding-passport-agencies-across-the-united-states/) will be opening in Cincinnati. - Updated passport processing times are always available [here](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/processing-times.html).Also, be sure to check visa requirements for your destination before embarking on any international trip. Check out this [page](https://www.usa.gov/visas-citizens-traveling-abroad), or visit embassy webpages for the latest guidelines and application links to ensure smooth travels.Lisbon is lovely at night. So go on…book that trip! Dec 18, 2024CVG Airport on display at iconic holiday show with strong local ties
Cassie Kiser / CVG Airport / 12-18-2024CVG Airport and Krohn Conservatory launched a partnership in 2024 that is rooted in serving the Cincinnati region. An eco-friendly airport model is on display at the greenhouse’s popular floral holiday show for at least 20 years. CVG’s replica sits alongside fellow community pillars that connect people and goods all over the world, including Procter & Gamble (P&G), Cincinnati Union Terminal, John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, Findlay Market, and more.About Krohn Conservatory and a local company behind the holiday showCincinnati’s Garden of Eden, Krohn Conservatory, is located within Eden Park between the East Walnut Hills and Mount Adams neighborhoods. The Art Deco era conservatory opened in 1933 and has attracted visitors ever since with its impressive display of more than 3,500 plant species throughout six unique showcase rooms. - Fern House - Palm House - Desert House - Orchid House - John Carroll Bonsai Gallery - Seasonal Floral Show RoomThe Seasonal Floral Show Room during the holiday showA Northern Kentucky company, Applied Imagination, has designed, installed, and dismantled each element in Krohn’s holiday show for more than 30 years. It is estimated that nearly 40,000 people visit the show every winter. Applied Imagination’s creations are widely displayed across the country, including at the New York Botanical Garden, Tucson Botanical Gardens, and the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.A sustainable way to create a Cincinnati regional icon In 2024, Applied Imagination artists used CVG’s Terminal and Air Traffic Control Tower blueprints to create an exact replica of these familiar airport icons.- The entire model is to a 1:130 scale.- The Terminal display is nearly nine feet wide and two feet deep. - The Air Traffic Control Tower is nearly two-and-a-half-feet tall. The creation took around six months to complete, from design to implementation. Artists were creative and sustainable when they created CVG’s sleek look: they used leaves that fell from a Coccoloba tree at Krohn to create the display. The leaves were colored for artistic effect. CVG partnership is also included in the displayAviation enthusiasts who visit the CVG model at the holiday show will quickly spot an Atlas Air cargo plane, a Boeing 747, ready for takeoff. Atlas Air Worldwide has an operations center in Erlanger, Kentucky, close to CVG. The cargo airline and CVG Airport have a strong partnership and are economic engines for the community. The Atlas aircraft is an Easter egg-style addition that complements additional planes that soar above the CVG diorama. When you can view CVG at the Conservatory CVG’s replica will be on display at Krohn’s annual holiday show from early November through early January. If you are unable to make it to the show in 2024, you are in luck! CVG’s display will be a part of the show through at least 2044.
