Jan 23, 2026Winter Travel: 5 Things You Should Know
CVG Communications / CVG Airport / January 23, 20261. CVG has a prepared winter operations teamThe award-winning team that is comprised of around 100 crew members use a fleet of snow and ice removal equipment to clear a runway in under 20 minutes. That is equivalent to clearing 12 interstate lanes for approximately two miles! In addition to the runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking areas, the team that is on-call 24/7 clears the airport’s walkways and nearby roads of potentially hazardous winter contaminants. [CVG’s winter operation team keeps the airport open and operational during winter weather events](https://www.cvgairport.com/on-the-horizon/cvg-ops-team-is-ready-for-winter/).2. Check the status of your flight before you leave for the airportWinter weather can cause flight delays and cancellations, and that is why CVG recommends that you check the status of your flight before you leave for the airport. To receive the most up-to-date flight status information, download your airline's app. While CVG is responsible for keeping the airport open and operational, airlines determine their flight schedules. Additional ways to stay informed include viewing flight status information boards around the Terminal and Concourses and by viewing [CVG’s flight status information webpage.](https://www.cvgairport.com/flights/)3. Arrive earlyThe golden rule of air travel is to arrive at least two hours in advance for a domestic flight and at least three hours in advance for an international flight. These guidelines especially apply for winter weather. Arriving early gives you more time to navigate any potential traffic slowdowns and allows you to complete the security screening in advance. Keep an eye on any traffic delays to and from the airport through sources like WAZE and TriMarc and plan drive time accordingly.Tip: to help alleviate anxieties, CVG [displays estimated TSA wait times on its website](https://www.cvgairport.com/).4. Aircraft are deiced as neededDeicing is critical for aircraft safety and performance. Airlines utilize CVG’s deicing areas to remove snow, ice, frost, and other debris from an aircraft’s surface prior to takeoff. This process is completed as timely as possible and is required before aircraft depart. Aircraft are also equipped with technology that can defrost and deice in the air.5. Pack smart for winter weatherHeavy winter clothes are a must-have if you’re traveling to a location that has cold weather. However, keep in mind that sweaters, coats, and boots can add more weight to your checked bag. Check with your airline in advance on weight requirements and weigh your bag before you leave for the airport if you can. It is a good idea to dress in layers, and place gloves, a winter hat, and other essentials in a carry-on bag. Soft-sided luggage tends to be more flexible and can typically fit more easily into overhead compartments.Learn more- Dec 15, 2025
Making your holiday travel merry and bright at CVG
The holiday season is in full swing, and whether you're heading home to family, jetting off for a winter getaway or welcoming loved ones to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region, CVG is ready to help you navigate the busiest travel season of the year.CVG's tips for stress-free holiday travel Arrive early\We recommend arriving at the TSA checkpoint at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. Pack smart\Check TSA's website for current guidelines on what you can bring through security. Remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in carry-ons: No more than 3.5 ounces per container, all fitting inside a one-quart bag, one bag per passenger. Put wrapped gifts in checked bags\Your wrapped gift may need to be unwrapped for inspection by TSA at the security checkpoint. It’s safest to put those gifts in a checked bag, or wrap them at your destination. Plan parking in advance Check parking availability in advance at cvgairport.com/parking. Valet, ValuPark or Economy are a great plan B if the Terminal Garage looks tight. Wait in the cell phone lotIf you're picking someone up, please wait in our free cell phone lot until they've collected their bags and are ready for pickup. Curbside is reserved for active loading and unloading only. Wisdom from seasoned travelers We asked the frequent flyers in our Facebook community to share their best holiday travel advice. Here’s what they had to say: Get Your REAL ID sorted now\Don't wait until you're at the airport to discover your ID won't work. Make sure your driver's license is REAL ID compliant – or your passport is current - before the holiday rush hits. Prep before security\Before you reach the TSA checkpoint, empty your pockets into your carry-on bag. If you're unsure whether something is allowed, put it in a bin or your bag rather than holding up the line. Stand right, pass left\Moving walkways are designed to help you get where you're going faster – but only if stationary people stand on the right so others can pass on the left. Stay on top of flight delays\Use your airline app to stay informed, and if your flight is delayed, take care not to stray too far from your gate. If the delay isn’t as long as expected, you need to be ready to board. Early-bird warning\Some airlines don’t start checking bags until two hours before a flight, so if you arrive earlier, you may need to wait. Be cool during de-boarding\The plane de-boards by row, not by how quickly you stand up. Pack your patience\Travel gets stressful during the holidays, especially for airport and airline employees who are working long hours to help everyone get home. A little kindness and understanding go a long way. Enjoy holiday cheer at CVG Live music\Through our partnership with ArtsWave, we're bringing the sounds of the season to CVG this December. You'll find live performances at the Welcome Point greeting area on select weekdays throughout the month.Gift-wrapping\Volunteers will be providing complimentary gift-wrapping from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 22 and 23 in Concourses A and B. Shop at our retail stores for gifts with a local twist, and then have them gift-wrapped before you fly! Shopping local at CVG\Want to reflect the region in your gift-giving this year? Here are some of the homegrown items you can find at our stores: - Kentucky bourbon balls: Available at Over the Rhine Market, Gaslight Market, Trip Advisor, Gaslight Gifts, Bluegrass Bazaar and travel @ ease - Cans of Skyline chili: Available at Queen City, Today Store, Over the Rhine Market, Gaslight Market, Trip Advisor, Gaslight Gifts, Bluegrass Bazaar, travel @ ease - Kentucky bourbon by the bottle: Available at Over the Rhine Market and Trip Advisor - Spirit wear representing Cincinnati universities and sports teams: Available at Queen City, Over the Rhine Market, Gaslight Market, Trip Advisor, Scoreboard, Gaslight Gifts Tools for travel ease GoodMaps indoor navigation app\New to CVG? It's especially helpful for travelers who have visual or hearing impairments or need step-free routing to their destinations.Kiosks for Q&A\Got questions about parking, security wait times, or food options before your flight? Scan the QR code at kiosks throughout the airport, text your questions and get real-time answers to help you navigate CVG with confidence. Jun 18, 2025Real ID Ready?
REAL ID is now in effect. As of May 7, 2025, you must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card—or a valid U.S. passport—to board a domestic flight. Not sure if your ID is compliant? It’s easy—just look for the star. Driver’s licenses and state-issued IDs from Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana that are REAL ID compliant will have a star in the upper portion of the card. Already have a valid U.S. passport? You’re good to go.Avoid travel delays—check your ID before heading to the airport.Real-ID Compliant License (with star)An example of a Kentucky Real ID compliant driver’s license. Source: KY Transportation CabinetNOT Real-ID CompliantExamples of non-compliant licenses. Source: KY Transportation CabinetWhat if I don’t have a star on my ID or a valid passport? You will need to visit a licensing facility that can issue a Real ID compliant form of ID. Here’s a link to locate an office near you based on the state where you reside:Ohio\https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/dl-real-id.aspxKentucky\https://drive.ky.gov/Pages/Find-An-Office.aspxIndiana\https://www.in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/real-id-overview/It’s important to note that many licensing locations are different from those you may have visited previously (county clerk, etc.) Some facilities may accept reservations for an appointment. Are there documents I need to have to get a Real ID?Yes! Each state has provided a handy guide of what you’ll need to bring along.[Ohio](https://dam.assets.ohio.gov/image/upload/publicsafety.ohio.gov/bmv2430.pdf)\[Kentucky](https://drive.ky.gov/Drivers/Documents/ValidProofDocuments.pdf)\[Indiana](https://www.in.gov/bmv/files/BMV_Documentation_List.pdf) Make your security screening smooth by ensuring your Real ID ready! Is a passport, Real ID driver’s license, or Real ID identification card the only thing that will get me on my flight? There are a few other documents that the Department of Homeland Security will accept including: - U.S. passport card (available when you renew a passport)- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)- U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents- Permanent resident card- Border crossing card- An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).- HSPD-12 PIV card- Foreign government-issued passport- Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card- Transportation worker identification credential- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)- U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)A complete list is available [here](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification).Do my kids need a Real ID?Nope. Kids under 18 don’t have to show identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. (A friendly reminder that trips abroad, including cruises, require a passport for everyone regardless of their age.)In addition to a Real ID compliant form of identification, your passport is also acceptable. They didn’t give me an ID right away after I left the office like I’ve received in past renewals, what’s up with that? That’s normal. They will give you temporary paperwork printed at the office and your official identification will arrive in the mail.Ok, so the big question: what if I don’t have a Real ID and I show up for a flight? As an eternal procrastinator, I wondered the same thing. So, I went straight to the source – the Department of Homeland Security. Here’s what they say: Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant and who do not have another acceptable alternative (i.e. Passport) can expect to face delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint. And from the TSA: In the event you arrive at the airport without acceptable identification (whether lost, stolen, or otherwise), you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name and current address to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening. You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if you choose to not provide acceptable identification, you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process, or your identity cannot be confirmed. TSA recommends individuals without acceptable identification arrive at least three hours in advance of their flight time. In short: there’s a chance you could miss your flight or not be allowed past security at all. Before you head to the runway, head to your local licensing office! What if I have more questions? The Department of Homeland Security has a list of detailed FAQs posted [here](https://www.dhs.gov/real-id/real-id-faqs). You can also reach out to your state’s driver’s license office.Do you have a really great travel tip or love to visit a special place and you think we should share with the Tri-State? Apr 2, 2025Here’s Why You Should Pop Over to Portugal!
A leisurely stroll to SintraReady for your next vacation? If you want to take in breathtaking views of mountains and beaches, visit wineries, taste fresh olive oil, and savor Lisbon’s signature pastry, [Pastel De Nata](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastel_de_nata), then Portugal is the place for you! On a recent family trip, we enjoyed touring the [Douro Valley](https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/douro-valley) and walking through historic streets as we met some the friendliest people who were eager to share their culture.Rua Augusta in LisbonHere are five reasons you should book your trip today.1. Getting there is easy, quick, and affordable. There are many ways to get to Portugal, including one-stop options with Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, United Airlines, British Airways, and American Airlines from CVG to [Lisbon](https://www.visitlisboa.com/en). United and British Airways offer one-stop service to [Porto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porto) and [Faro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faro,_Portugal). And since it’s located on the western side of Europe, it’s a relatively short flight over the Atlantic Ocean. (The Newark-to-Lisbon leg of the trip is only 6.5 hours.)The Douro Valley makes an amazing day tripI often recommend multi-city itineraries for trips over six days, and Portugal’s excellent rail system is a great way to utilize what’s known as an “open jaw” ticket. This is where you fly into one city, take a train (or car or flight) to the next town, and then fly home. One popular option is to fly into Lisbon, take the train to Porto, and fly home. As a bonus, you could also consider a stopover in [The Azores](https://www.visitazores.com/en), a chain of gorgeous islands off the coast of Portugal. Tip: United’s schedule to and from CVG is especially great for these types of trips in Portugal.[Sao Bento](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Bento_railway_station) features a 100-year-old train station with detailed artworkKeep an eye out for sales on my [Deals](https://www.cvgairport.com/deals/) page. You can often find round-trip flights for $490-$600 in late summer through spring.Calle Rosa de Lisboa, aka: [Pink Street](https://www.lisbonportugaltourism.com/guide/pink-street.html)2. Portugal is a great destination for families. It’s truly one of the most family-friendly places we’ve visited. We never felt like we were disrupting meals while dining out; in fact, we experienced the exact opposite. Waiters who interacted with our toddler brought toys and distractions and overall made us feel very welcome. We met wonderful shop owners who offered our kid treats while we shopped. One employee even grabbed a free hair tie for us after he noticed that my son’s hair was getting on his face. The same spirit held at the airport, where upon departure, we were ushered to a line for families with small children. We found a number of affordable accommodations for our family in “serviced apartments,” which are apartment-style suites but with a check-in desk and staff. It’s a nice blend of Airbnb and hotel.Porto was especially family-friendly!3. You won’t run out of things to see and do. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back afternoon at the beach, a quiet boat ride down a scenic river, or a wine tour with friends, you’ll find it in Portugal. A few of our favorites include:A boat ride along the [Douro River](https://www.visitportugal.com/en/content/douro-valley) is a relaxing journey through vineyards and beautiful hillsides. There are varying lengths available; we set sail for about an hour while on a day trip.Tour centuries-old wineries and learn more about winemaking than you could ever imagine! Tasting is, of course, encouraged!A quick 45-minute train ride takes you to charming [Cascais](https://visitcascais.com/en). This quiet seaside town offers beautiful beaches, a wide variety of shops, and delicious food. We visited for a day but want to spend three to four days relaxing there on a future trip. The [Chapel of Souls in Porto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapel_of_Santa_Catarina), with its distinctive blue paint, stands out on this busy street. Make sure to take a moment to enjoy the detailed artwork. The [Dom Luís I Bridge](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g189180-d636456-Reviews-Luis_I_Bridge-Porto_Porto_District_Northern_Portugal.html) links Porto with its neighbor across the river, Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s especially beautiful at sunset.Stroll through [Vila Nova de Gaia](https://www.travel-in-portugal.com/vila-nova-de-gaia), learn all about Port wine, check out a modern art gallery, or enjoy a view from the sky in a tram.[Sintra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sintra) is a stunning palace and museum. Tip: make sure to reserve your spot, and try to avoid holidays as they can become very crowded.Pastel de Nada is a famous egg custard tart served warm. It can be found in many cafes across Lisbon.4. Portugal is a foodie’s paradise. From a variety of soups and stews to delicious seafood dishes, Portuguese cuisine is worth experiencing. There are also incredible restaurants with creative flavors from around the world. We enjoyed an excellent ramen restaurant one night and a tasty Indian restaurant the next.We found this small restaurant and courtyard on TripAdvisor with some of the tastiest food we had on our trip.I highly recommend using [TripAdvisor](https://www.tripadvisor.com/) and [Google](https://www.google.com/) reviews to find highly rated places to eat. Keep in mind the best meals are often not in the main tourist areas. Just a heads up: many locals eat dinner later than you may be used to, often sitting down to eat at 9pm or later.Cheese cones at a market in Porto = heaven?5. You can join a free walking tour to see and learn a lot in just a few hours. Most large cities in Portugal offer “free” walking tours. We love taking a tour on the first or second day of a trip to a new city because it’s a great way to learn a little bit about multiple sites, and you can come back to explore the ones that interested you the most. The guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and work entirely for tips. We usually give $10-20 per person depending on the length of the tour. These are usually kid-friendly, too. Many tour agencies request that you reserve a spot so they can gauge the size of the group. However, many will let you join if you show up and there aren’t too many people.I’d love to know your favorite destinations from CVG. Share your travel tips with me @JayKruzOfficial on [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/JayKruzOfficial), [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/jaykruzofficial/), and [X](https://twitter.com/jaykruzofficial). -JayLearn more
